We are now just a little more than 3 weeks away from the 69th Annual Columbus Celebration. The Waldorf Astoria Gala is on October 12th this year and the world famous New York City Columbus Day Parade is on Monday, October 14th.In addition to this year’s Grand Marshal, Joseph R. Perella, the Foundation is proud to have as Honorees fellow Members William Freda, Senior Partner and Vice Chairman of Deloitte LLP, and Joseph Mattone, Chairman of Mattone Group LLC.
The Foundation is honored with a special gift this year by renowned artist Greg Wyatt, sculptor-in-residence at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City. Greg is also the program developer for the Columbus Citizens Foundation’s Franco Zeffirelli Scholarship Fund for the Arts. This year, Greg has donated a specially cast bronze sculpture, Luna to the Columbus Celebration. Greg is most famous for his bronze work, which is usually not available to the public. His sculptures are usually sold through galleries or by commission only, and have gone for as much as $2.4 million!
Luna will be auctioned
live at the Gala with an auctioneer,
separate from the Silent Auction and online Charitybuzz auction (launching October 2). All proceeds from the auction of Luna will go toward the Foundation's Franco Zeffirelli Scholarship Fund. This a very rare event and the Foundation is honored by Greg's contribution and we look forward to a lively auction at the Gala.
A picture of the 7 foot tall Luna clay model is at left. This model was used for the casting that occurred just this past Thursday, September 12th, at the famous Modern Art Foundry in Astoria, NY. We will feature additional pictures and video of the piece’s development as they become available and at the Gala.
If you are interested in attending the Gala or making a donation to the fundraising efforts, tickets may be purchased by contacting the Foundation Office at 212-249-9923.UPDATE: To reach the largest audience possible, Luna will be auctioned using an auction house, not at the Gala.
